From Offshore Oil & Gas to Offshore Wind: Our Journey into Renewables with Support from OWGP and ORE Catapult

At Fennex, we’ve always believed in the power of technology to transform how people work in some of the world’s most demanding environments. Since our founding in 2016, our mission has been clear: to digitise, automate, and streamline health, safety and environmental (HSE) processes in the energy sector. What started as a bold ambition has evolved into a track record of success—supporting over 75 offshore installations globally, and helping teams reduce incidents, improve reporting, and operate more efficiently.

But over the last 18 months, our journey has taken a new direction—into the offshore wind industry.

Transitioning into renewables wasn’t a simple pivot; it was a natural evolution. We recognised that many of the safety and operational challenges in offshore wind echoed those we had already solved in oil and gas. What was missing was a digital solution built specifically for the needs of this rapidly growing sector. And so, WindSafe™ was born.

Identifying the Opportunity

It all started with a conversation. In early 2024, our Strategy Director, Nassima Brown, reached out to the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP). We were seeking sector insights and funding support to help adapt our award-winning Behaviour Based Safety Solution (BBSS™) to meet the needs of offshore wind developers and contractors. The result was WindSafe™—a cloud-based platform powered by AI and machine learning, offering real-time safety visibility, predictive risk insights, and enhanced collaboration across entire project teams.

“Fennex’s WindSafe™ solution builds on the company’s BBSS TM  (Behaviour Based Safety Solution) digital platform, already  operational in 75 international offshore oil and gas installations. BBSS TM users have recorded KPIs (key performance indictors) reflecting a 43% decrease in recordable incidents and a 30% boost in safety reporting.” Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult Case Study.

Accelerating with Support

Thanks to OWGP’s Innovation Grant, we were able to engage directly with key industry stakeholders including Shell, Vattenfall, ScottishPower Renewables, and Offshore Energies UK. These sessions were pivotal in shaping WindSafe™ - giving us a clearer understanding of the sector’s pain points and confirming the appetite for real-time safety and risk monitoring tools.

Further support from OWGP’s WEST programme helped us deepen our market knowledge and refine our product positioning. With guidance from partners like Everoze, we learned how to better align our offering with offshore wind’s unique safety and operational demands.

By late 2024, we had secured our first pilot customer - BlueFloat Energy | Nadara Partnership—deploying WindSafe™ across four of their UK projects. And we were fortunate to be selected for two of ORE Catapult’s flagship support programmes: F4OR North East Scotland and Launch Academy Scotland. These initiatives helped us strengthen our capabilities, scale our offering, and accelerate commercialisation.

Recognition of the Journey

Recently, both OWGP and ORE Catapult published case studies showcasing our transition from oil and gas into offshore wind, and the role their programmes played in helping us grow. For our team, this recognition is both humbling and energising. It reflects not just the progress we’ve made, but the strength of the partnerships behind us.

The case studies highlight how WindSafe™ went from concept to deployment, and how the support we received helped us adapt our technology, build relationships with offshore wind leaders, and prove the value of our solution. Being featured as a success story is a proud moment - not only for our team, but for everyone who contributed to this journey.

“OWGP recognised WindSafe™ as a unique solution capable of enhancing safety performance and operational reliability for offshore wind operators and contractors - offering significant benefits to the sector as a whole.” Offshore Wind Growth Partnership Case Study

A Team Effort

At our core, Fennex remains a small but passionate team, built around a strong foundation of offshore engineering expertise and a drive to deliver real-world impact. We are immensely proud of the talent we’ve nurtured engineers, developers, analysts - many of whom joined us straight from university and have grown into exceptional professionals helping shape the future of offshore safety.

None of this would have been possible without the dedicated support from OWGP, ORE Catapult, AREG, NZTC, ETZ Ltd, and the many individuals and organisations who shared their time, insight, and belief in our vision.

Looking Ahead

WindSafe™ is now commercially available, and we’re focused on scaling it further across the UK and global offshore wind markets. But we know this is just the beginning.

The offshore wind industry has bold ambitions, and we want to be a part of making them a reality - by delivering smart, AI-powered digital tools that improve safety, reduce costs, and support more sustainable operations.

As Nassima Brown said best: “With OWGP and ORE Catapult’s support, we are not just adapting to change; we are driving it—pioneering AI-driven technology to revolutionise offshore wind operations and push the industry toward a smarter, more sustainable future.”

We’re excited for what’s next - and we’re ready to keep pushing forward.
