Last Friday, the Fennex team traded screens and code for stones and ice, venturing out to Curl Aberdeen for a day of curling.
This wasn’t just another team-building event—it was a whole new experience. None of us had ever tried curling before, which meant we were all on equal ground (or, in this case, ice). No secret experts, no unfair advantages. Just a bunch of beginners ready to figure it out together.
Our adventure started with some coaching from the pros at Curl Aberdeen. First, we learned the classic curling lunge and the skilful push that sends the rock gliding down the ice. Turns out, curling has some physics to it, and knowing just how much force to use is harder than it looks. But that’s where our teammates came in. If the rock needed a boost, two of us would jump in with brooms, sweeping furiously to control the rock’s speed.
After getting the hang of lunging, sweeping, and doing our best to aim, we divided into teams of four and faced off in two matches. It was a battle for the bullseye, and while we may not have landed every rock exactly where we hoped, we managed to score some points and share a lot of laughs along the way. Friendly competition made it even better, as teams strategised (or, honestly, just tried not to fall) and rooted each other on.

Curling was a refreshing change from our usual team-building activities like hiking or go-karting. Learning together as beginners helped us connect in a new way, whether we were celebrating a near-perfect shot or laughing over a missed lunge. It turns out there’s something special about being out of your comfort zone together—especially when you’re armed with brooms and sliding on ice!
By the end of the day, we might not have become pro curlers, but we left with some great memories and an appreciation for both the sport and our team. Sometimes, the best way to strengthen a team is to try something entirely new—especially when it involves a bit of slipping, sweeping, and scoring on thin ice.
