Fennex was founded by people who spent years working across the energy industry, people who had the privilege of seeing the world while they worked. Those experiences shaped how we think, solve problems, and build technology. We wanted our team to have that same opportunity — not just a short holiday, but genuine time living elsewhere, absorbing new cultures, and bringing those perspectives back into their work.
That belief led to the creation of the Fennex Digital Nomad Scheme, a structured way for employees to work remotely abroad for part of the year, blending meaningful travel with meaningful work.
One of the best examples of this in action is Sean Bisset, our Mobile App Lead.
Sean joined Fennex at just 20 years old after studying at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Born and raised in the city, he’s now part of our mobile development team — but thanks to the Digital Nomad Scheme, his work has taken him far beyond Aberdeenshire.

Across two trips in 2024 and 2025, Sean spent a total of five months living and working in Seoul, Busan, and Jeju. He quickly adapted to life in South Korea, even teaching himself to read and write Korean within a week.
“It’s surprisingly easy,” he laughs. “And once Koreans realise you can speak a bit, they really want to talk to you.”
Working from Korea meant shifting his schedule to 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, giving him a two-hour overlap with the Aberdeen team.

“It actually worked out perfectly,” Sean explains. “For someone on the mobile team, it felt a bit poetic to be quite literally mobile.”
Outside of work, he immersed himself fully in Korean daily life — from late-night snacks in 24-hour convenience stores to wandering Seoul’s buzzing streets, Busan’s coastal markets, and Jeju’s laid-back cafés. He built lasting friendships (many he still speaks to every day) and even had the chance to bring his mum along at the start of his 2025 trip.

“It made me realise how lucky I am to work in tech; I can do my job from anywhere. And Fennex genuinely encourages that kind of trust and personal growth.”
Sean’s experience captures a core part of Fennex’s culture: giving people the freedom to broaden their horizons and bring that learning back into their work. He’s already planning his next adventure and hopes to spend time working from China in 2026 as he continues learning Mandarin.
“I used to think my career would always keep me in one place. Now I know it doesn’t have to.”
